Arbor Low Goddess

The doll below was inspired by a trip to Arbor Low in Derbyshire to see the sunrise this Mabon (autumn Equinox)

I wanted to create something simple and try to evoke the feeling of a visitor to the henge thousands of years ago, drawn there to watch the sun rise over the landscape in this special place.

Although I love costume history and development, I am no professional reconstructor of such garments - I prefer to take elements of style and detail and put them together in such a way as to give a feeling of such times - in this instance a simple dress and ornaments such as may have some echoes of the past.

I really like her - there will be others!

this is yours truly at Arbor Low greeting the sunrise! Magic!

Batty Betty the Trick or Treat Queen!

Samhain  is almost upon us, so of course every shop is full of vampire tat, warty witches, and all manner of drivel - so with tongue firmly in cheek, here is my Halloween Maiden, a celebration of the tacky side!

Ancient Days Mother and Child

This is another development of the Arbor Low Goddess mentioned before using some different bits and bobs.....journeying back from collecting hedgerow fruits and berries, a young mother rests awhile beneath a windswept tree, with her baby in her arms....she contemplates the sweeping landscape and looks toward her own home settlement on the hilltop...

Now in the collection of Mrs. Pat Lythgoe of Warwickshire.

Arbor Low

I love Arbor Low in Derbyshire - it's sometimes called the Stonehenge of the North, but I think that does it a disservice - it is what it is, without pointless comparisons - a unique magical place, where there is something indefinable in the air - you could call it energy, or magic, or what you will. Whatever it is, it's wonderful.

A little painting just 4" x 6"

Sparkly and exotic!

Freya

A very special doll! She's even more one of a kind, as she has the most stunning pale silvery hair - the work of a very talented lady by the name of Suzi from Yorkshire.

Costume designed by Heather for her own special interpretation of the Norse Godess Freya, in snowy white and fir green velvet, with silver snowflakes, quartz crystals and wheatsheaf charm necklace.

The doll beneath is my own utterly one of a kind 23" tall porcelain goddess, who lives here with me and could be seen as my genius loci, or house goddess. She wears the very loveliest jewellery, including real amber and jet, handcrafted lampwork beads and lots of everything! Dressed in green velvet with a sparkly indian print cape, she carries amethysts and scented herbs, and exudes calm. Flowers, berries and crystals make up her circlet.
